What did the Mugwumps stand for during the 1884 election?

The independent political party the Mugwumps was comprised of Republicans who wanted to band together to demonstrate support for the Democratic candidate for the 1884 election, Grover Cleveland.

They remained active in presidential politics through 1892.

The word mugwump was a slang term for “kingpin.”
