More than 36 percent of the nation’s net worth (assets minus debts) was held by the top one percent of households in 1989, up from below 20 percent in 1979, according to a 1992 study.
The study shows that the wealthiest few increased their share of the nation’s total wealth as much during the Reagan years as they did in the 100 years from 1830 to 1929.
