When was the first Earth Day in the U.S.?

Sponsored by a nonprofit youth organization called Environmental Action, Inc., Earth Day was first celebrated on April 20, 1970, to draw attention to the pollution of the nation’s environment.

The nationwide action involved more than 2,000 college campuses, 2,000 community groups, and 10,000 schools.

Over 20 U.S. Senators spoke against pollution. Earth Day continues to be marked by environmentalists.
