Christmas Eve, December 24 was observed as Adam and Eve Day on the medieval church calendar.
One element has survived from the medieval plays put on that day depicting Adam and Eve’s fall:
the paradise tree, representing the tree that bore the forbidden fruit.
The paradise tree, set up in many German households by 1561, was the forerunner of the modern Christmas tree.
