The name was first coined in 1916 when Goldfish (1882-1974) formed a company with several partners, including Edgar Selwyn (1875-1944).

Fusing the names of its founders, the new company was named “Goldwyn.”

Goldfish liked the name so much he made it legally his own in 1918.
